Our blood donor program ensures we're prepared for critical situations.
At Riverview Animal Health Centre, we save lives! As a 24-hour emergency hospital, we work around the clock to ensure that we are here for you when your pet needs us. Occasionally, in emergency situations blood transfusions are required, to ensure we are prepared in times of need we have developed a blood donor program. Blood donors are volunteer dogs that we screen in order to ensure they are the best candidates. Once the donor has been approved, they are put on a list and are called when needed.
The requirements for dogs to volunteer as donors are they must be over 50 lbs., between the ages of 1-8 years old, up-to-date with vaccines and even-tempered.
Cats can donate blood but it is a little bit trickier. Unlike dogs, cats do not usually stay still long enough for us to collect the blood, therefore they usually need sedation for the procedure.
