Blood Tests

Monitoring the health of your dog is crucial, as they may not exhibit visible signs of illness.

Just like in humans, blood work is an essential part of a diagnostic picture. When you do bloodwork on your dog, we ensure that we do all the tests needed to ensure there is a complete picture. The Doctor will test to ensure that red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets are functioning properly, they will also check electrolytes to assess for imbalances, and a panel that has 17 tests will look at all organ function. That is more than 25 tests to aid the veterinarian in diagnosing or to ensure your pet is healthy. At Riverview Animal Health Centre, our blood work is done in-house, so you can have an answer quickly.

Why are blood tests for dogs important?

Blood testing for dogs is very important as it allows the veterinarian to paint a complete picture of your dog’s health status. They can examine visually with their hands and eyes, but they are unable to look inside of a dog. The best way to ensure that your dog is healthy inside and out is to get regular blood testing done. Prior to your dog’s spay/neuter is an excellent time for your puppy to get their first blood testing done. On top of the fact that it will allow the veterinarian to understand your dog’s organ function, as well as blood cell and platelet count, it will also give them a baseline of how everything looks during a healthy stage of life.

How do I understand the blood test results?

It can be difficult to understand blood results, this is why our very knowledgeable and friendly veterinarians will sit down with you to go over the results and provide you with the answers to your questions.
