Chemotherapy for dogs involves the administration of drugs to inhibit or kill rapidly dividing cancer cells in the body. Much like in humans, chemotherapy is used as a crucial component of cancer management for dogs, aiming to slow down the progression of the disease and improve the animal’s quality of life. Treatment plans are designed based on the type and stage of cancer, tailoring the chemotherapy drugs and dosages to meet the specific needs of each canine patient. The goal is to target cancer cells while minimizing adverse effects on healthy cells.
Chemotherapy side effects in dogs and cats are not as evident as in humans. If side effects do occur, you may notice decreased appetite, vomiting and diarrhea. Hair loss does not usually occur in dog and cat patients.
Chemotherapy is given to our patients via IV catheter. Your pet will have IV fluids placed, and will stay on them for a few hours after the chemotherapy medication is given.
